Arden Street Oval
Nestled in North Melbourne is Arden Street Oval, once the holy ground of the Hotham football club.
Arden Street Oval has a colourful history as a suburban footy ground (and open range elephant reserve.) This vintage t shirt shows the old football ground stands as they once stood, and the great gasometer that solemnly guarded them.
Never the game’s grandest stadium, Arden Street Oval symbolised the simpler days of suburban football. The stands were spartan and a tight subterranean tunnel squeezed players out onto the park. But Arden Street Oval was honest. It was football played for the people who packed its ends each Saturday afternoon to witness war without weapons.
Much of old Arden Street Oval is gone. But the footy ground is still as much a part of North Melbourne as the tip of the Town Hall. To the fans God will always bless this native land.
